Taking a pledge to protect nature and preserve the environment for future generations, 181 tribal community members came together on World Environment Day 2026 in Rayagada district, Odisha. The gathering highlighted the growing role of communities in driving environmental conservation and climate resilience.

On 5th June 2026, Prayatn Sanstha, with financial support from SBI Foundation under the SBI Gram Seva Project, organized the celebration to promote environmental awareness and climate action. The programme was graced by Smt. Padmavati Tadangi, Zilla Parishad Member; Shri Sina Jilakara, Nayeb Sarpanch of Pipalaguda Gram Panchayat; Shri Amitab Jilakara, Ward Member; and Smt. Mariya Sirika, Sarpanch of Karubai Gram Panchayat.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. Padmavati Tadangi highlighted the importance of protecting the environment and encouraged villagers to plant and nurture trees, conserve natural resources and adopt environmentally responsible practices. Other dignitaries appreciated the environmental initiatives being implemented under the SBI Gram Seva Project and their contribution towards creating cleaner and more climate-resilient villages.

The celebration commenced with an environmental awareness rally carrying messages on tree plantation, environmental conservation and waste management. The rally was followed by a plantation drive, encouraging community members to actively contribute towards increasing green cover and protecting the environment. Participants also took a pledge to protect nature, conserve natural resources, reduce pollution and work collectively towards building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future for coming generations.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kanhu Charan Malik, Project Officer, shared that the project has supported the installation of 50 solar street lights, construction of four farm ponds for water conservation, operation of the SBI Swachchta Saathi vehicle for waste collection and installation of dustbins and compost pits across five villages and eight hamlets to promote cleanliness and sustainable waste management.

The World Environment Day celebration served as an important platform for raising awareness on environmental protection and reinforcing the shared commitment of Prayatn Sanstha and SBI Foundation towards sustainable rural development and climate action.
