Chadheigaon, a small village in the Gop block of Puri District, Odisha, is primarily known for its predominantly agrarian economy. Basanti Bhoi and her family live here, facing constant financial instability. Depending on daily wage labor, their income was unpredictable and low, and with five members for sustenance Basanti often worried about their future. With limited income sources, they were constantly battling financial insecurity, relying on an unreliable means of survival. While some villagers raised goats to supplement their income, Basanti lacked both the knowledge and the financial resources to start her own goat farming venture.
Basanti’s life took a turn when the Holistic Rural Development Project (HRDP) was introduced in fifteen villages of Gop Block, including Chadheigaon village. The project, implemented by Prayatn Sanstha in collaboration with HDFC Bank, aimed to empower marginalized communities by providing sustainable livelihood opportunities. A dedicated team established various village-level institutions and organized meetings to introduce new farming techniques and ways to improve livelihoods, with a focus on creating self-reliant, healthier communities.
During one of these meetings a discussion was made on ways to increase livelihood sources and how the organization can help them. The Village Development Committee (VDC) members recommended Basanti for goat farming. Basanti then received extensive training on goat rearing, which covered crucial aspects such as feeding, healthcare, breeding, and the economic benefits of goats. With financial assistance, Basanti purchased three goats to begin her venture.
These goats started not only providing fresh milk for her family’s consumption but also became a potential source of income. Through diligent care and management, now Basanti’s herd grew to eighteen goats. She recently sold eight goats and earned Rs. 55,000, significantly improving her family’s financial stability.
Today, Basanti Bhoi stands as an inspiration in her village. No longer bound by the unpredictability of daily wage labor, she has found stability and confidence. Her journey shows how the right support, combined with determination, can turn dreams into reality. Goat farming has not just provided her with an income but has also instilled in her a sense of pride and empowerment.
Basanti’s success is a testament to the power of sustainable rural development, proving that with the right opportunities, even the most vulnerable can build a better future for themselves and their families.
