In the village of Fadlogora, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, where many families from vulnerable communities reside, the local Anganwadi Centre once struggled to provide a safe, comfortable and engaging environment for young children. The ageing infrastructure and lack of child-friendly facilities made it difficult to deliver quality early childhood education. Limited seating arrangements and the absence of play-based learning materials further affected children’s attendance and participation.
Everything changed when Prayatn Sanstha launched the Integrated Rural Development Project (IRDP) in 2025 with the financial aid of the H.G. Foundation. The project began working across five villages, including Fadlogora, with the vision of improving the quality of life of vulnerable communities through community-led development. Strengthening early childhood education became one of the key priorities, and under the project, two Anganwadi Centres were renovated and upgraded into Model Anganwadis.
Key village-level institutions such as the Village Development Committee (VDC) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were formed and strengthened to identify local priorities and actively participate in the planning and implementation of development initiatives. During community meetings, members highlighted the need to improve the condition of the Anganwadi Centres so that children could access a safe and stimulating space for learning and development. Based on these discussions, the renovation of the centres was prioritised.
The intervention transformed the Anganwadi Centres into vibrant, child-friendly spaces. Renovation work improved the overall infrastructure, while comfortable furniture for children and age-appropriate indoor play materials created an engaging learning environment. The improved facilities have encouraged regular attendance, enhanced classroom participation and made the centres more welcoming for children and their caregivers. Today, the Anganwadi also serves as a community space where mothers regularly come together to discuss child health, nutrition and early childhood development.
Gulapi Pramanik Anganwadi worker from Fadlogora shares, “Earlier, children were not very interested in coming to the centre because the environment was not attractive or comfortable. Today, they eagerly attend every day to learn and play. The new furniture and play materials have made a remarkable difference and parents are happy to see their children learning in such a positive environment.”
Today, the Model Anganwadi Centre in Fadlogora stands as a symbol of community participation and sustainable rural development. More than just a renovated building, it is a nurturing space where children can learn, play and grow with confidence, laying a strong foundation for a brighter and more promising future.
