Prayatn team at Cholapur Block of Varanasi District effectively organized 11 Teacher Community Interfaces in the government schools covering 13 project villages. Main objective of the interface has been to promote quality education by providing a platform to the teachers and community members to pinpoint major issues hindering children’s education and plan joint action on the same. Starting from 22nd September, the activity went on till 16th November which has led to the identification of numerous issues related to education like irregularity among school children, unclean or absence of toilets, non-availability or unlevelled playground, low-quality or insufficient mid-day meal distribution, discrimination among students, corporal punishment, parents not providing educational accessories, absence of school boundary wall, lack of electricity, etc. Identification was followed by cause and effect analysis and action plan to resolve the identified issues. Further, roles were shared and responsibilities were delegated among the Head Master, Teachers, School Management Committee and community members as per the action plan to resolve each individual issue. Altogether, the interface witnessed a total participation of 691 members including 564 females and 127 males. Many teachers and Head Masters appreciated the initiative and accepted that this activity has revealed certain issues faced by children in the school of which they were totally unaware of and assured that they would take heed to resolve the issues at their end in order to maintain a child-friendly environment. The initiative was a part of the Sambal project which has been undertaken by Prayatn to ensure Child Protection in the block and is being supported financially by Kindernothilfe, Germany.
